Al Fayoum has a fascinating Roman history, with many of its attractions dating back to the first three centuries AD. The locals not only mummified their dead but also added a portrait of the deceased on top of the wrappings. Despite the Roman preference for cremation, the Egyptians continued to bury their dead. These Fayoum portraits are well-preserved due to the dry desert climate and are the most extensive collection of portraiture from ancient times. They offer a glimpse into a diverse society of Egyptians, Greeks, Romans, Syrians, Libyans, and others who thrived in Al Fayoum 2,000 years ago. The portraits were created using a pigmented wax technique called encaustic on wood.
